The 10 Social Media Thoughts You Liked Best

Looking back on an exhilarating 2010, I wanted to take a second to just say thank you. No frills, no flourishes. Just thanks. There’s a LOT of places you could go to get you social media and digital marketing fix, and I’m incredibly honored that you choose to spend time here.

As part of my look back at the ~150 posts that appeared here this year, I sifted the top 10 that received the most page views. To me, it’s an interesting combination of tools recommendations and bigger picture trend coverage – just what I’m shooting for here.

The 10 social media thoughts you liked best The 10 Social Media Thoughts You Liked BestHopefully, some of your favorites made the list, and perhaps there’s some others that you missed.

1. The 39 Social Media Tools I’ll Use Today
Second most popular post I ever wrote. Makes me realize how much noise there is in the social tools space, and how much people crave clarity and recommendations.

2. R.I.P. 3 Ways Facebook is Killing Your Website
One of the more controversial posts, and a place where I sounded the alarm initially about Facebook’s master plan. I’m not sure I agree with all of this now, but it’s an interesting read.

3. 5 Staggeringly Simple Ways to Create Custom Facebook Landing Tabs
I originally wrote this for Social Media Examiner and it did well there, too. Shows how much people want to know about the mechanics of Facebook fan page operations.

4. 7 Surprising Statistics About Twitter in America
The fascination with Twitter has no limit. This was one of my favorites this year, as it was one of the first times I analyzed and interpreted research findings. I’m doing more of that now, and I like it.

5. The 8 Wrong Questions PR Firms Are Asking About Social Media
This one was from the heart. Since I work with a lot of agencies all over the world, the content in this post was very personal and visceral. I’m delighted that it got a lot of attention, as it’s an important issue if we’re going to truly move this industry forward.

6. Social Media Monitoring Tools – How To Pick The Right One
A terrific, relevant guest post from my friend Katie Van Domelan (now the client services manager at Cotweet – one of my clients). She nailed it.

7. 11 Mind-Blowing Reasons Your Company Needs Facebook
Another one that appeared first on Social Media Examiner. I channeled my inner Mari Smith this time and took the pro-Facebook position.

8. 7 Ways to Use Social Media to Create Buzz-Worthy Events
This is one that’s very useful (I think) for event folks. I’m glad that one of my posts where I include slide presentations made this top 10 list.

9. 6 Newfangled Social Media Tools Worth Discovering
This one was a redux of #1 (the 39 tools). Amazing that both made it. This is the newest post to make the top 10, written just a few weeks ago.

10. 13 Observations From South by Southwest (SXSW)
Lightning in a bottle. I wrote this in 25 minutes on the plane on the way back from Austin. It’s one of the five or so posts I’m most proud of this year. Even Robert Scoble tweeted that he thought I nailed the SXSW experience. That was pretty cool.

I guess it’s not a surprise, but nine out of the top ten have numbers in the title, which matches up with my analysis of winning blog post headlines. I don’t love the fact that numbers do so well because it can become hackneyed, but the data doesn’t lie.

I liked the one about knowing what social media monitoring tools to use. I have been looking for more suggestions on that front.

Hey Jay!!! hahaaa, thanks heaps for the kind props - now that one made me burst out laughing!! You're a talented and savvy communicator and it's always a joy to read your posts! :)

Great list of resources! Thanks Jay!

The number thing really bugs me but of course I see the same pattern. I'm not sure what it really says about the blogosphere but it would be a shame if the Internet turned into a world of numbered headlines. Maybe it already has.

Thanks for the great year Jay. Best blog out there.

Thanks very much. I'm honored.

Again, well done. A nice concise top ten list.

Thanks for your phenom 2010 most poplular posts recap! I like your split personality posts on FB ;) and I found your 6 new social media tools post very helpful - oh and I'll be a backup karaoke dancer with ya anytime :)

Thanks Z. I'll take you up on that dancing offer.

Amazing set of resources. Thanks a lot.

Jay. Funny, as I was reading through your "top 10" I was trying to find some trend/pattern in the titles. Then I read your comment, "nine out of the top ten have numbers in the title." Boom. The best part about that statement (besides being true) is that so does THIS post. People like lists, right? Easy to digest.

Thanks for writing blog posts that make me think and force me to comment/share b/c they are so awesome. I'm not a teKILLya (tequila) guy, but I'll virtually toasting you right now w/ my frosty beer.

Here's to continuing to kick ass in 2011.

Rock on.

Thanks DJ. Toasting you right back. Looking forward to a great 2011
with you.

This a fantastic post, an aggregate of the top 10 very resourceful posts! Thanks so much for all the thought, research, and value you bring.
