7 Reasons I’m Moving to Bloomington Indiana

Top 7 Reasons I’m Moving to Bloomington, Indiana:

  1. Skin too dry.
  2. No idea what a Hoosier is. Decided to find out first-hand.
  3. Want to cheer for a historically mediocre college football team.
  4. Living near Sedona, AZ for 6 years is giving me vortex poisoning.
  5. Need to upgrade quality of locally grown corn.
  6. All these pine trees are starting to look the same.
  7. Arizona Diamondbacks are so bad, I’m taking my business elsewhere.

On The Road Again

If you’re reading this on the day it’s published, me and my family are somewhere between Albuquerque and Oklahoma City, with cars full of kids, the dog, the cat, the snake, the lizard, and 8 cases of wine. And my laptop. Everything else we own is somewhere behind us in a big truck.

7 reasons i m moving to indiana 300x197 7 Reasons Im Moving to Bloomington IndianaWe’ll be arriving in Bloomington, Indiana on Friday (August 13) to start our new lives there. I realize people move all the time, but for us it’s a big, scary deal. I’ve been in Arizona for 40 years (I moved to Lake Havasu City when I was just a baby). While I’ve lived all over AZ, I’ve never lived in another state.

But, thanks to the support of many amazing Convince & Convert clients, readers and supporters, I’m not really tied down to any particular location. I have customers all over, and I’ve decided to take advantage of that fact by instituting a dramatic change of scenery.

Arizona has been very, very, very good to us. We’ve been blessed beyond comprehension, and the list of family, mentors, clients, colleagues and pals who have helped us along the way are far too numerous to list. And it’s very difficult to leave our families and friends. But, looking into my crystal ball, I don’t see the next few years being the finest in Arizona’s history. Too big of a budget gap. Too narrow of an economic base. Too divisive politically. I could be entirely wrong, and eventually Arizona will come roaring back – as it always does. But for now, I want greener, quieter pastures with suffocating humidity.

The More Things Change

With regard to Convince & Convert, there will be no changes. I will continue to have the same clients, and perform the same social media strategic planning and coaching services that I do today. The blog will remain the same. I will, however, be on eastern time now, so you west coasters may find tweets from me waiting for you when you arise.

Many people have asked us “Why Bloomington?” It’s a fair question, as perhaps a more obvious switch – given my occupation – would have been to NYC, Austin, or some such. But, I grew up in a small town (as did my wife), and that’s the atmosphere we prefer. Not “there goes Cletus, everybody knows he’s faking that back injury” small, but certainly a manageable size where you know your neighbors and have a shared sense of purpose.

The Science of Cities

FindYourSpot.com Our Company 7 Reasons Im Moving to Bloomington IndianaWe used the online filtering tool Find Your Spot to narrow down our relocation options. We looked at criteria like size (under 100,000 people), college town, good schools, access to health care, cost of living, etc. and the site produced a list of candidate cities for our consideration.

There were some awesome possibilities, including Madison, Fort Collins, Eugene, and a few others I can’t recall. But Bloomington has by far the best combination of attributes for us. In addition to being a very cool town, it’s centrally located and within one hour of the Indianapolis airport. This is a major consideration for us, given how much I travel (and how much I’ll likely travel in the next couple years after The Now Revolution – my forthcoming book with Amber Naslund – is published in February).

It will also be nice to be near my friends (and clients) at ExactTarget and Compendium Blogware, in Indy.

So, Bloomington it is. Candidly, I’m scared to death. As a friend told me recently, “not many people would intentionally blow up a great situation in the hopes of finding a better one.” But, I’m excited by the possibilities, eager to get our kids set up in what I think will be a terrific situation, fired up about our new home, and eager to get integrated into the Indiana social media community.

Will there be bumps along the way? Definitely. Even getting this far has been a carnival ride of mortgage, insurance, real estate, movers and utilities drama. But ultimately, it’s going to be worth it.

In social media, and in life you have to embrace a simple concept: Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained.

As a fellow Hoosier and faithful reader of your blog, welcome. And even though it's not Avon, IN (great small town too, minutes from the Airport) I bleed Crimson and Cream– so Blmtn is kind of like our Mecca. Welcome and best of luck.

Safe travels and may the move be everything you hope for (I'm confident it will be). I just took a shot at FindYourSpot the other day. Duluth, MN came up #1.

Thanks for all you do, look forward to more. Be well, and stay contagious!

Jay, I find it extremely commendable to take a good situation and attempt to find an even better one. One thing I've learned through several life-changing decisions I've made over the years: Don't settle! If you think there's something better, you're probably right — even if you're not sure what it might be at the moment.

Best of luck to you and your family. One bonus of the move is you're closer to the greatest city on Earth: Chicago!

Congrats on striving for better. I look forward to hearing how things start to shape up for you!

Just this morning, I was walking in my Phoenix suburb wondering about the future of this state…or rather my future in it, and wishing I could find an escape hatch. So I'm trying to balance the sense of envy that crept in as I read your post. I think it's great to thoughtfully and intentionally build the structure that supports your future. What a great example to set for your children. Here's to fresh starts and growing new roots in good soil! Traveling mercies to you and yours. (A Kenyan expression and the title of one of my favorite Anne Lamott books.)

Jay, I think you voiced what a lot of us in AZ are concerned with now: “But, looking into my crystal ball, I don’t see the next few years being the finest in Arizona’s history. Too big of a budget gap. Too narrow of an economic base. Too divisive politically. I could be entirely wrong, and eventually Arizona will come roaring back – as it always does.” Best of luck to you in your new home!

Jay, after living in NYC for 33 years, I relocated my family to South Florida 7 years ago to take a Director of Sales position for a huge Family Entertainment Center. I know how it feels to leave family & friends behind. I can say that just having each other to rely on has made our family so much stronger over the years. Since we moved down here, we've gone through my wife's heart surgery and kidney transplant, me getting fired from two jobs (people in Florida find us NYC types to be very disagreeable – don't know why) and starting my video production company.

We pulled through it together and we're the better for it today. So look forward to the challenge – it might be the best thing that happens to you and your family.

Jay – a couple of years ago, we moved from Scottsdale, AZ to Honolulu. It was a scary, crazy move away from family and friends and everything I'd known for 20 years. People were either envious (I wish I could do that) or told us we were crazy and that it was career suicide. The skeptics were wrong, yet it was the best thing we ever did. And to those who want to move someplace else, I always say “so make your plans and do it.”
Taking the crazy risks, especially when they are scary is sometimes the most rewarding. Good luck to you and your family. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I hope you LOVE your new home.

I thought about relocating to DC and when I was going there for a job interview I didn't eat for a couple days en route to DC because I was freaking out that this could actually be a reality. The interview didn't go as planned and needless to say it wound up being a growing experience.

Good luck in Bloomington, IN. The midwest is a great place to live but you are going to have to get used to this thing called snow.

  • http://reallifemadman.blogspot.com Marjorie Clayman

    Well what an adventure!

It's sad that Arizona is kind of going crazy. I sympathize. My Buckeye state often makes people tilt their heads a little to the side in that kind of sympathetic “I'm glad I'm not a co-citizen with you” kind of way.

Truthfully, and perhaps selfishly, I am excited to see your observations on midwestern culture. I think a lot of people view the midwest as Chicago, then a lot of people in overalls. I think a great communicator like you will be able to bring some very interesting revelations to the fore about this great adventure.

And heck, you still manage to bring a really neat looking tool to your readers' attention amidst all that chaos. You're too cool for school, Jay :)

    Travel safely!

I'm connected with quite a few Indiana bloggers and they are all terrific. And, unlike the aloofness that AZ bloggers kind of are, in Indiana they seem to be much more cohesive and supportive and so maybe you'll be able to share how to do that so your AZ bloggy brethren can do that as well.

Best of luck! Have fun! And enjoy the experience.

Absolutely – I'll be there (@JeremyAWilliams) as well as our director, Amy Vaughan

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Thanks Mimi. Like most things I do, it will either be a great example for my children, or a disastrous cautionary tale. I'm not big on half measures!

Thanks Anne. Looking forward to my first South Bend trip.

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Absolutely Ryan. The Indy tech and social media communities have been amazing, and I'm not even in the state yet! See you soon.

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

After the last few weeks, I'm 40 but feel 55. You, my friend, are welcome at any time under any circumstances. We've got lots of room. Bring @babywaldow

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Wow. Thanks Daniel. One man's commendable is another man's crazy as hell, but I'm delighted you're in my corner. Chicago is definitely part of this equation. I have 5 clients in NYC, none in Chicago. I need to change that, and being closer should help.

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

The final split is that I have the wine and the dog. My wife has the kids, the cat, the snake, and the lizard. I prefer my cargo.

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Holy mackrel! My angst about one move has to seem positively trivial to you, Jon. Thanks for not laughing at me on my own blog.

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

I was hoping for ice hockey, but I don't think they have that. Lacrosse, maybe?

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Indeed. I'm trying to cram experiences in at a 2×1 ratio. I've lived 80 years in 40, and have done so proudly. There's a method to that madness. It's something I learned from my best friend and brother-in-law about 10 years ago. There's a big, long, painful story there that maybe I'll have the courage to share on this blog someday.

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Have you been to Duluth? I was there for business last year, visiting my friends at Flint Group. Very cool town. Beautiful. Incredible architecture. Toooooo cold for me though.

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Thanks Karen! Let me know when you're down for a game, and we'll meet at Nick's for Sink the Biz.

  • http://twitter.com/mybestfarefindr MyBestFareFinder.com

Jay, I did the exact opposite move from Indianapolis to Scottsdale almost 2 years ago. Obviously not for the economic issues you stated, but more for the scare the hell out of me challenge factor. I lived in Indy 40 year and was looking for something almost completely opposite. Anyway, Bloomington is a great city and I believe you and your family will love being Hoosiers. If you have the inclination, you should look up a cool technology incubator in Bloomington named SproutBox. Enjoy the ride!

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Thanks Steve. It's so amazing to have good friends like you that are truly location-agnostic. I can't say that I could have or would have made this move without social media.

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

I trust them, they're great. It's just too warm for too long in their truck. No air conditioning.

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Yeah, Big 10 hoops is so interesting because the strength in the conference moves around a lot. Wisconsin, IU, Purdue, Michigan State, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio State have all been in the Final Four in recent memory (Michigan a little longer back maybe). Great balance!

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Thanks so much. It means a lot to me that you took the time to comment, especially on this post. Are you going to SF?

Interesting to hear your reaction to AZ vs. IN bloggers. I'm going to Blog Indiana next week, so I'll check it out.

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Thanks very much. I've heard of SproutBox actually, and look forward to connecting with them. Too bad we couldn't have coordinated this 2 years ago. We could have traded houses!

Safe travels, my friend. Continued success and much happiness in your new midwest home. My guess…I will see you more often now that you are not an Arizona resident — your visits to town may have more “social” time. Our paths will cross again soon (I'll be in Indy for Labor Day, I'll check in then.) In the meantime, I will look forward to conversing here and on FB and Twitter and to finding opportunities to hang out.

Tarboro is an hour east of Raliegh and 1.5 hours west of the Outer Banks. Good location. I went from Lexington, KY, a city of 250,000, to a small rural Southern town of 10,000 so an adjustment.

Congratulations on your move to Bloomington – I hope you brought some Mellencamp for the road trip! It was interesting to read about your decision to move there. I spent my undergraduate years in Bloomington, but have always thought it would be a nice place to move back to at some point. A mix of good people and academia, a few lovely lakes nearby — and hopefully the IU basketball team will someday return to its old glory. Once you get past the stifling humidity of August, I'm sure you'll love it! Safe travels.

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Having never lived anywhere with humidity, that part will be

Oh, honey, are you ever coming to the right place.

I live about an hour from Btown in southern Indiana. It's a *great* quirky college town, and I think you and your family will love it. Judging by the 8 bottles of wine, you should definitely check out Oliver Winery. It's a little kitschy (an Indiana winery? Yup–there are several. Easley in Indy is also good.) But where else can you see “winehenge,” a limestone replica of Stonehenge? And their Camelot mead is outstanding (assuming you like mead).

And I can tell you what a Hoosier is, but you'd probably rather not know…

Now for the important burning question on everyone's mind…how the hell is anyone going to know where to eat in Flagstaff now that the “Hottie and Fatso” radio show has left town? Bloomington is a wonderful place, especially in terms of raising a family. I spent ~25 years there, and you’ll love it! (Although I’ve known some people who loved the tranistion from Arizona and some who didn’t).
Be aware, despite what the numbers may say, jobs are *not* that easy to find here, but you can eventually work your way into a decent one through volunteer and part-time work.

Honestly, Bloomington’s only drawback is that is located in Indiana- the surrounding areas and Indianapolis are a *lot* different than B-ton. And uh, “mediocre football team” -is being kind. It was a good thing I was a soccer fan when I went to IU.

I’m aware that this post is old, but imagine my surprise when my husband and I were googling to find out how crazy we might be to leave Flagstaff for Bloomington.

I have to know your thoughts about making the move. Our reasons are proximity to family, cost of living (huge), and to not lose all of the wonderful things that led us to Flag in the first place.

  • Zdzislaw Meglicki

You’re right to be “scared to death.” There’s no city, no mountains, no sea, not even a decent river in Bloomington, IN. It’s a dull place. Poorly connected: there’s no passenger airport or rail station here, no Greyhound bus. The university itself is mediocre in all rankings (especially poor in the value-for-money comparisons). There’s a good school of music here, but a school of music away from city crowds and famous concert halls is pointless.

  • Bloomingtongal

Bloomington is ok, not great by any means. Probably not the worst either. It’s definitely not the Mecca it is made out to be. I mean common calling Bloomington the Paris of the Midwest seems rather absurd. Really? Paris?

  • Jason Jue
