Even when things are going great, you’ve got to remember extinction could be right around the corner.
(Watch today’s video to see my stationed in front of an enormous T-rex skeleton. In Montana.)
Recently Google and Twitter announced that you will now be able to get tweets inside Google search results again.
That used to be case until 2011, and then their previous relationship lapsed. So for the last four years or so you cannot find tweets inside Google search results, at least not in real time. But that is changing, and it’s mutually beneficial.

Google is Self-Aware in a Way Few Tech Titans Have Been

Google understands that the world that they have dominated for a long time is becoming extinct.
The same way that dinosaurs used to dominate, the webpage is no longer the key unit of how information is found and consumed. (highlight to tweet – it’s fun!) When you’re looking for something that isn’t necessarily particularly timely, yeah, you’ll look in Google. But if you really want to know what’s happening right now, you’re not going to Google. You’re going to Twitter, and Google is all too aware of it, which is why they need Twitter results in the Google search database.

Twitter Needs to Get Mainstream BADLY

Conversely, Twitter continues to struggle in its battle against Facebook for prominence and preeminence. They realize that if tweets are in Google search results, it will make many more people aware of Twitter. This burgeoning awareness should increase membership, usage, and advertising base.
This is a critical time for Twitter because they are getting thumped by Facebook on the high end, and pecked to death by Tumblr, Instagram, and SnapChat on the other end. Twitter must get bigger, faster to satiate their ambition. (highlight to Tweet)

Both of these companies are smart enough to understand that, especially in technology, things change. Sometimes you’re on top, like the dinosaurs, and then all of a sudden you’re a skeleton in front of a museum in Montana.
Kudos to both Google and Twitter for swallowing their pride at some level and getting back together. Can’t wait to see how this shakes out in the weeks to come. In the meantime, read this post from Eric Enge to learn how you can start leveraging this partnership right now.
