Time is proving that no matter how much social media changes, the core rules of engagement remain the same. Transparency and authenticity have been points of entry recommended by social media experts since its beginnings.

Now, in what seems like decades later (in social media years), transparency and authenticity might well be referred to as “best practices” in any engagement activity. The blogosphere is especially demanding of something “real.” In fact, if you’re a marketer, online influencers generally agree that getting free products to review is great, but the trump card is the authenticity and transparency something experiential offers.

A recent event produced by my agency with client CoverGirl®, bears this out. CoverGirl® invited Los Angeles-area online influencers to a Beverly Hills salon to witness make-up artist Molly Stern get Parks & Recreation star Rashida Jones red-carpet-ready for the MTV Awards.

It doesn’t get much more real than inviting a group of people in to watch you get ready. And the online influencers recognized that for what it was: transparent and authentic.

They loved the behind-the-scenes experience and the transformation tips from Stern – particularly because they saw how effortless the make-up application was. Better yet, they loved their own transformations afterward. It doesn’t get any more authentic of an experience than that.

Great marketing tactic to make their target marketing relate more to the product. Covergirl's target market are not going to be attending the MTV movie awards, they are going to be the ones home watching them. By letting viewers feel like they are apart of the Movie awards it helps Covergirl relate to the their customers.

Taking it from the online to offline is always great to make the whole "influencer" thing more real. I recently got chose as an influencer by Klout (http://klout.com) and Virgin Airlines to take a free round-trip flight. I thought that was great as it was, but what made it better was that both companies made a point of doing something in person for all their chosen influencers (a small tweet up with just the Klout people and then a big Virgin party where we actually got to meet Richard Branson).
Instead of just handing off a product and hoping the influencers said good things, they went out of their way to make us feel important, and I think that will deffinitly go over well when any of us say anything about the promotion.
Online is always great, but it will never replace real life experiences.

I love this idea, here's a way to take it online. UStream! I love giving tech advice, and it's what I'm doing at my new website...this week I'm going to try inviting people into UStream if they need support or want to chat about issues there having...authenticity is the only way to go.

Love it!!! I'm headed to Dallas next week for the eWomenNetwork 10th annual conference with a couple thousand women!! Each year, Nordstrums hosts an incredible evening where they shut down the whole store and entertain us all with food, drink, music, dancing, merriment, make-up and perfume samples, the works... and of course we all *shop*!!!
