The Truth About the iPad

Are you old enough to remember when the TV remote control was invented? I sure am. Before that fabulous, glorious day, one of my jobs at home was to jump up and twist the channel knob at the whim of my parents, like some sort of orthopedic carpal-tunnel experiment gone astray.

But progress sometimes comes in half-steps, and the remote control revolution was gradual. Before we got a real TV remote, we had a non-sensical, half-assed remote, consisting of a keypad connected to the television via a 12-foot cord. Less than seductive technology.

ipad convince and convert 1 The Truth About the iPadAfter a few days of messing around with it, the iPad reminds me very much of that remote control with a cord. Cool, and a difference-maker, but not 100% transformative.

Most of the chatter leading up to the iPad’s release was around how would it perform against standard computing tasks. I have found this to be a poor comparison. I use my iPad instead of my iPhone, not instead of my MacBook. Because as a content consumption device, the iPad is simply without peer.

It’s an almost magical device that can show incredibly crisp HD video, all the audio you can handle, Web pages, books, online magazines (Zinio is great on the iPad), newspapers, tweets, Facebook, Linkedin, and just about anything else you’d want to digest. It’s fast, it’s seamless, and it’s enthralling. Using the iPad to do something as mundane as check headlines on your local newspaper’s Web site becomes a visceral, tactile experience as your ability to touch and move content redefines the physiology of the task. Same with email. I’ve never had as much fun deleting spam as I have with the iPad. Swipe. Swipe. Swipe.

In truth, the touch mechanics of the iPad are virtually identical to the iPhone. But the size of the iPad makes it feel so much different. You can get your face near the screen, making it seem substantially larger than 9.7 inches. In fact, because of how close you can hold the iPad, to me its screen size feels bigger than my 15-inch MacBook. Little iPhone games like solitaire become substantially more engaging on the iPad.

If you read Convince & Convert, this probably doesn’t describe you, but if your computer usage consists primarily of email and the Web, I would seriously consider making the iPad your primary device. I think I sold about seven of them to older ladies on a flight from New York last week. They were instantly in a swoon over the size, light weight, and ability to do what they consider to be “everything” in one package.

I am considering with at least moderate seriousness getting rid of my iPhone and getting something that actually functions well as a phone (hello Verizon), and using the iPad for all the rest.

Now, the bad news.

The iPad is not a computer. Not even close. The virtual keyboard is barely better than the iPhone, and you still cannot touch type. You can’t save or store files. There’s no USB port. Or CD drive. Or camera. Or ability to run two programs at once. I would never, ever, ever write this blog post on my iPad (although people that bought the external keyboard for it might disagree).

As a content creation device, the iPad is pretty much pointless for anything exceeding a two paragraph email. The exception is content that is created by touch. The drawing apps I’ve played with are simply incredible, but that’s not really my line of work – and probably not yours either.

What is it?

Before arrival, I wondered where the iPad would fit in to my robust technology lineup. For now, I think it’s a highly mobile DVD player, game machine, Kindle, iPod, email appliance, and Web surfing device.

Which unfortunately makes this MacBook Pro a really, really, really expensive typewriter.

I’d love to hear your thoughts if you’ve got an iPad, and I’d be happy to answer any questions you have. Leave them in the comments and we’ll discuss.

Just a suggestion for those who ran to buy an iPad. Would it work as a marketing and/or presentation device? Instead of having pieces of paper or needing a meeting room with a projector, how would it fit into a one on one meeting with your client and a PowerPoint? Would it work with a i-pen or something like that?

Jay – Great post. I have not bought an iPad but, from what I have read, the consumption vs. production of content distinction is valid. Translation – it's great for consuming stuff, not so great for producing it.

I've heard others claim that they keyboard and USB adapters allow it to be laptop-like, but to me what buy a device when you're just going to attach a bunch of things to it that makes it more like a laptop?

I agree with your perspective on the iPad being the ultimate content consumption tool – and for that reason, I think it will be a great device for education, particularly for college students. The cost of textbooks and the bulk of carrying a laptop could be replaced by an iPad, without too much lost in the utility of actually having a computer in class.

I don't think that Apple achieved what they wanted to with their take on a tablet, but I think there is something to be said for introducing a really awesome Kindle alternative to the market – one that has a lot more bells and whistles.

Thanks for the comment Alyssa. I find Kindle to be easier and better as a book device. Easier on the eyes, and light enough for one hand usage. But, iPad HD screen, color, and zoom make it better for magazines – and I can absolutely see education ( and mobile medicine) potential. Crazy that a $500 device could be cheaper than textbooks. I should have written a textbook long ago!

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

Jay, I too have and iPhone, Macbook and will probably get the iPad. Right now I carry my macbook to the living room to do facebook, email and that stuff, but it would be nice not to have to unplug all that but instead just pick up the handy iPad and do my thing. I wondered about the whole computer thing, but after seeing it, know that it probably isn't good for that. Thanks for your post…

For me the answer I've yet to see is where do you put it? It's not going in your pocket. It's not going on your lap to replace your computer. When you go on a business trip and you have your phone and computer, would you bring a 3rd device with you? I don't see it leaving your coffee table, shelf, counter, etc. So, where does it live?

I think its interesting that you can consider the iPad a DVD player, but there's no CD drive. How do you get music onto the iPad? Do you have to hook it up to a computer or use a flash drive to transfer the music? How long would that take? Also, what are the hidden price tags on this toy? I know you have to pay for WiFi on the iPad, but what if you have wireless at your home? Does the iPad connect to it? You have to pay for WiFi, e-books, itunes downloads, apps?

Nice review Jay. Most of the time I'm running to the store to get the latest gizmo, but I'm holding off on the iPad for one of the reasons you mentioned. It's really just a BIG iPhone-like device. The first version of the iPhone was out of date in year one.

What bugs me the most is that the iPhone doesn't have a camera included. I use Skype for a business line and would love to be able to video chat using an iPad…

But alas – Apple has much more money to be made before they get to that feature. ;)

Hi Theresa. Movies, books, music, etc. all come from the iTunes store.
However, you can get magazines from Zinio, news from USA Today and
others (USA Today is a killer free iPad app), live radio world-wide
from radio.com app, etc. Also, if you're a Netflix member, you can
watch any of your streamable movies live on iPad.

Wi-Fi on the iPad is free. The ATT 3G connection version comes out
next week I think, and it's $29/month for unlimited access. Pretty
cheap by current standards. And no contract, which is nice.

I have wireless at home, which I connect the iPad to most of the time,
since I work from home. For travel, I recently exchanged my USB air
card that I used on my Macbook (Verizon, $60/month) for a MiFi (same
price), so that I can make my own Wi-Fi hotspot at any time, and
connect up to 5 devices to it (usually iPad, iPhone, MacBook, wife's
    iPhone, kids' iPod Touch).

  • http://www.convinceandconvert.com jaybaer

I agree that the lack of camera is ridiculous. Just saw a post on
Mashable that you can download a .99 app and take pictures on your
iPhone, and they show up on iPad. That's pretty cool. Link below in
the comments re: making calls on iPad (I haven't tried it yet).

Jay – thanks for the review of it. I can't help but give away my age when I say that I remember the days of the dial on the TV all too well. The remote with the big cord attached to the clunky box that stood on top of our television was probably the “sexiest” thing I had seen when we got it. I haven't necessarily been chomping at the bit to get one but am glad that you confirmed what I was already thinking. I am sure it would be the coolest thing to tote around but I think I will spend elsewhere right now.

This pretty much sums up my feelings about it, and my hesitation towards running out and getting it (I must admit, I am tempted. VERY very tempted).

The inability to run concurrent apps, or flash, and use a USB was a dealbreaker for me (although dragging shapes around Keynote with my fingers vs. a mouse sounds tantalizing). But then I thought about it, and do I really need a USB all the time? Sure I do on my many laptops. But since everything is in the cloud anyway, I can certainly save things to Dropbox, especially those Keynote presentations that I'm itching to create with my fingers.

I think the true utility lies in getting the 3G (I'd love to use it during my commute out of SF to the Bay Area 'burbs on the train), but since AT&T isn't jumping up and down at the thought of giving its iPhone 3G users a price break, I am not jumping up and down at the thought of forking over more money to AT&T for its substandard service.

I'll all say, without going in depth, is it is very clear to me why features (ESPECIALLY USB, camera, webcam) were left off. It wasn't an oversight or lack of ability/technology. But then again, Apple is a business.

Thanks very much for sharing your thoughts, Jay…Your characterization of the iPad as the quintessential content consumption device is spot on!

In terms of it being a poor device for content creation, I'm still on the fence. The keyboard (dock or wireless) eliminates the text input problem, although it would be a bit clunky on a plane. A bigger limitation, in my opinion, is the inability to connect a mouse (USB or wireless). This is pretty much a show-stopper for any applications that require precision beyond a finger touch.

The thing I found hugely frustrating about the iPad is lack of multi-user support. We bought two for our design office, and I can see many buying it for the family, where several people would want to use it. If you have two people use the device with different iTunes accounts, you can't update or change apps that one person installed without their iTunes password. Email for several users would have zero privacy, since you can't password-protect multiple accounts. And then there are all the problems that would arise if you wanted to sync to multiple computers with different apps or music or books. We ultimately had to create a single, shared iTunes account and then set up an equivalent account on all desktops to which it would be sync'ed.

Despite these flaws, and the ones pointed out here, it's still pretty much magic. It's going to be fascinating to watch HP, Nokia and others try to beat it!!

Totally agree, JB. I haven't picked one up yet. Just been able to check out a friend's. As a parent, I'm almost considering getting one for my 4 year old. • randygiusto

it goes on the short business trip, in your briefcase/backback/messenger bag. Many people leave their laptops at home on 1-2 day trips already and just bring BlackBerries or iPhones (especially the tradeshow crowd unless you are a member of the press or blogosphere, and unless you have to give a presentation).

For a week-long trip, it might be the laptop.

  • randygiusto

camera support is there, it's not activated, just like multitasking support has been there in the OS but not activated. Cameras are dirt cheap, in every phone, but to do video calls, there's a little more IP involved, which would have hiked the price and may have impacted battery life.

OSX would be too much of a drain on battery and performance on a device this size.

  • randygiusto

It's about total control. USB and external memory slots = giving up a little control.

  • randygiusto

yeah, interesting non-multi-user experience. I hadn't thought of that. Setting up multiple iPods on an iMac or PC was never easy either until later generations.

  • http://twitter.com/dudieboy Dan Birlew

Jay – I love the iPhone, and my 15″ Macbook Pro, and I'm sure that I'll cave in at some point and get an iPad, too, but I'll probably wait until the second generation, partly because there aren't any features that I can't live without (and I thank you for confirming that here with your review) and partly because I just plain don't want to spend the money on it strictly for the coolness factor right now.

I may be wrong about this, but it seems that most Apple products (and tech products in general, for that matter) are better in their second and third iterations. Maybe they'll add a camera, USB, etc. on the second gen device. I can wait. :)

Thanks very much for your thorough look at this product. Much appreciated.

Jay, I did the same calculation as you and opted for a Mifi rather than another AT&T wireless USB dongle.

At the same monthly cost, my data is better with AT&T (grandfathered in with an unlimited connection), but I checked and my current usage doesn't really hit the 5gb verizon cap. Making wifi available on the NYC commuter bus gives me the option of laptop (convertible Fujitsu tablet) or iPad; iPad gets the nod when I'm not trying to do heavy lifting of spreadsheets, word docs, etc.

When I'm clearing emails or reading (RSS, web, ReadItLater, etc.), the iPad is just more pleasant, even if the ability to sort emails to batch process seems to have eluded me so far.

Every day that goes by, I use my phone (and Macbook) less, and iPad more. And MiFi is soooo much better than USB dongle. Surprised it hasn't taken off more yet.

Great post Jay. I totally get the point of the iPad as a way to make casually web browsing, social networking, and ebook-reading simpler and trendier, but in no way are these things “computers”. (Really laughed aloud at your comment that your macbook is a very very expensive typewriter!)

I blog for a living and I was really frustrated at how hard it is to type on the iPad. I think people who plan on using their iPads for blogging should seriously avoid an iPad and instead go for a laptop like a MacBook. And you should really consider Verizon instead of the iPhone and the horrendous service from AT&T (i.e. the world's most expensive flashlight).

I'm going to reference this post in my blog. Great post!

thanks. IPad is great for conference tweeting, and blog commenting (like this one). But for writing long passages? No.

You say, 'I think it’s a highly mobile DVD player' It can't play DVDs.
It is too heavy for old wrists to carry about. For reading on the letters are to uneven and change their sharpness when moving the ipad around.
The best way to judge its success is to see how many land up very soon in the secondhand dealers shops. Lots I bet.

Thanks for the comment Derek. You're right. I should have said “movie
player.” I like it a lot for that, and have now watched dozens of
films on iPad. I agree about the weight. A lot heavier than Kindle.
Glass screen adds to the weight, definitely.
