Technology is advancing so rapidly, that rules and regulations can’t keep up. Jay Baer weighs in, based on his recent experience on a Southwest Airlines flight.

We’ve got all kinds of new technology, but can regulations keep up with it?
On my way out to Las Vegas to host IBM Interconnect – a 21,000-attendee event for mobile, dev, cloud devotees – I had an interesting experience that I wanted to share with you.
(watch video, taken from the main stage)
I was on my laptop using the wifi on Southwest Airlines. On the new OSX Yosemite on Mac computers you can connect your phone and your iPad and your laptop together so that you can use iMessage and wifi to connect from iPhone to iPhone, via your laptop. So you can essentially be sending text messages from your laptop, but it’s not actually text messaging because you’re using the wifi signal, not an actual cell phone signal.
So I was doing that in the air. I bought the wifi package from Southwest, and I was having a chat with some friends. The flight attendant saw me and then talked to the pilot, and then, without calling me out by name, comes on the microphone and says:

“Hey, I just want to remind you, everybody on the flight, that it’s against FAA regulations to be sending text messages during flight.”

So I felt a little bit admonished, but I wasn’t even sending a text message. I’m using the wifi that they charged me to use. But the flight attendant doesn’t understand that nuance. Certainly the pilot doesn’t understand either.

Is Tech Moving Too Fast?

This IBM event is all about the advances in technology and the Internet of things, and it’s all moving so quickly. Our regulatory environment cannot move fast enough to keep up with the advances in technology.
The same issue is present in drug culture. You’ve got kids making new formulas for spice and bath salts every five minutes. State legislatures can’t regulate that fast enough to keep it out of the hands of kids. It’s like legislative whac-a-mole.
We are at an inflection point where technology is moving so fast we don’t know how to put rules and regulations around the use of that technology. And that’s when things start to spiral out of control.
