We all have personal brands and have to constantly position ourselves to get the type of work we want, whether that be as an employee or business owner. These days, if you don’t have a strong web presence and you’re not getting your name out there, no one will do it for you and you will miss opportunities. Here are some tips on how to stand out, get recognized for your abilities and build a strong career that you will be proud of:

1. Become the master of your domain.

The best way to become known is to have everyone recognize you as “the” expert in your field. When people know who you are and what value you bring to the table, it’s easier to land a job or get clients. It’s a whole lot better than cold calling or submitting a resume, too. You need to carve out your own niche so you can gain visibility and opportunities will follow. Choose a topic that you want to be known for and then pick a specific audience you want to be known to. That audience could be students in Boston or small tech companies in Chicago. The point is that you can’t be everything to everyone so you need to zero in on the right people.

2. Be consistent with everything you do.

If you want to start a blog, make sure that you are posting consistently. By posting once a week, you can develop an audience that can support your career. If you post irregularly, people won’t expect much from you and won’t put the effort in to try and follow you. When it comes to developing a consistent brand image online, you should use the same picture and positioning across every social network profile that you’re part of.

3. Follow industry experts.

One of the best ways to learn about anything is by following people who have the experience and knowledge. You can follow thought leaders on LinkedIn, subscribe to their blogs, and read their books. It’s never been easier to connect with industry experts too. You can see them at conferences, email them and reply to their tweets. As a bonus, you mind end up getting one as a mentor, which could be a big career booster for you.

4. Remove yourself from your computer.

Too many people rely on technology these days and it’s hurting their interpersonal relationships. Instead of just using Facebook to keep in touch with friends, use it to schedule in person meetings so you can build real relationships. Employers are looking to hiring and promote those who have great soft skills over those who can just do the job. By putting yourself in various social situations, you will be able to develop your network, become a better communicating and learn how to deal with people. Use your online network to filter down the right people to meet offline and then schedule those meetings and lunches.

5. Pump out high quality content.

We hear the term “content marketing” a lot as it applies to companies writing articles that get people interested in their products and services. This works in a similar way with professionals. If you’re putting out great content that relates to your expertise, and doing it consistently, people will take notice, share it and it will boost your career. You can also use it as a way of networking with people in your industry.
