Please Help Me Support Make-A-Wish Foundation

I need your help please. For every vote you cast for the keynote at South by Southwest featuring me and Amber Naslund, we’ll donate $1 of our book advance to Make-A-Wish Foundation®.

  1. Go to http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/
  2. If you don’t have an account, please make one. It will take just a few seconds
  3. Click the link that reads “Explore the Proposals for SXSW Interactive”
  4. In the search fields at the top of the page, please enter “Naslund” where it reads “organizer”, then click “search panels”
  5. You’ll see the description for “The Now Revolution” (our panel, my name will be added later). Please click the little thumbs up icon.
  6. Then, tweet it out please. Something like “I voted for #TheNowRevolution for SXSW, to benefit @makeawish”

For every tweet sent that includes the #TheNowRevolution and @makeawish, we’ll donate $1 from our book advance (we trust that you’ll actually vote before you tweet, naturally).

If you’re feeling particularly frisky, I’d love for you to vote for my other two panels while you’re in the mood. “The Black Art of Optimizing Facebook Wall Posts” can be voted for here. “Your Content Stinks! Drive Results with Content Marketing” can be voted for here. Thank you!

The Revolution is Coming

I don’t think I’ve announced it publicly yet, but the final title of the new book from Amber and me (coming in February, 2011) is:

The Now Revolution: 7 Moves to Transform Your Business with Speed, Smarts and Social Media

Many, many thanks to everyone who voted on possible titles, and provided suggestions. We’ll have Facebook page and other promotional stuff about the book online soon – including pre-ordering capabilities.

Meanwhile, we’re hitting the road to present the core concepts of The Now Revolution to businesspeople and marketers everywhere. Amber presented a smashing summary at the recent SocialFresh Charlotte.

The South by Southwest keynote slot will be tremendously important as we launch the book, so we’d sure appreciate your help voting for us. Your votes count for 30% of the “scoring” when organizers determine who gets to speak at the mighty SXSW Interactive festival in March in Austin, Texas.

On behalf of Amber, myself, and especially Make-A-Wish Foundation, thanks for your help!

What I just saw is that it do feels that some person go against a lot of best practices for this processes. And it is confusing, you know. Kind of disappointing for many. One other thing that I'd like to raise in here is that, in our Social Media Community, Marketing, etc, the competition in these calls for votes has a lots of overlap. I think it is of the utmost importance to prevent any messy situations from evolving.

Thanks Marjorie. And for you and anyone else reading the comments who feels similarly, I'd be delighted to donate on your behalf with or without your vote. Just DM me and I'll take care of it.

Well, all that negativity aside, I would like to say that I respect you and Amber for trying to make something good happen based on the wacky situation. i don't know all of the inner workings of SXSW (that's step 57 in my plan for world domination) but I'm sure they have everyone between a rock and a hard place. It's a shame. Thank you for your honesty and your willingness to discuss this potentially delicate issue. I can't wait to read the book :)

just voted for #TheNowRevolution to keynote #SXSW and supported @makeawish via @jaybaer & @AmberCadabra! http://bit.ly/blt7UL

I know. Really. And I would very much like SXSW to change this process. But until then, I can't not participate as some sort of personal protest. With the book coming out, I have too much on the line for that. That's a lame excuse, but it's the truth.

RT @jaybaer: Thanks to everyone who's voting for #TheNowRevolution For each vote @ambercadabra and I will donate $1 to @makeawish http://bit.ly/bBj04g

Hi Jay,

I have all of the respect in the world for you and Amber, and I know that this concept comes from a very good place, but there is also a part of me that is kind of feeling muddled about this...I tend to agree with what Danny said.

What I have noticed (this is my first year being on Twitter in a serious way around SXSW) is that it feels like a lot of very knowledgeable people kind of go against a lot of best practices for this process, and it kind of confuses me, even disappoints me. Another person tweeted a link to a blog which turned out, much to my chagrin, to be a post asking for votes rather than a vote about the subject.

I guess it's all transparent, so it's not really "bad." But I think if everyone banded together and told SXSW that this forces really good people to negotiate their need to have a panel with what they teach the rest of the year, it could make a difference.

One other thing that I would toss out there...in our community of Social Media, marketing, etc., there is a lot of overlap and competition in these calls for votes. I think it is of the utmost importance to prevent any messy situations from evolving. SXSW may find that requiring people to get voted in will implode because people will either vote for everybody, evening the score, or vote for nobody, not wishing to upset the apple cart.

I agree. I hate the voting process. Amber wrote about it in her post today as well. But, as forthcoming authors, it's important for us to be at SXSW, and thus it's important to garner some votes.

That said, we figured if we'd have to be asking people to vote anyway, we'd rather try to do so to benefit some other people - not just us.

We absolutely realize it could be interpreted as if we're trying to "buy" votes with Make-A-Wish Foundation as the conduit. But that's not the intention at all. We believe - perhaps falsely - that with our combined readership we could generate a lot of votes regardless. We just felt like adding a charitable element to the SXSW voting process made the whole thing a little bit less desperate and cheesy.

We're working closely with Make-A-Wish Foundation national office (who has to approve every tweet and status update) to ensure this is all very much above board, transparent, and legit.

I do appreciate your perspective, and it bums me out that you're uncomfortable with this effort, as your work in the social media fundraising arena is worthy of emulation.

Hi Jay,

While I think it's great that you're supporting the MaW Foundation, I feel a little uncomfortable with the approach.

It's almost as if you're bribing with charity to get your panel(s) on the SxSW floor. It's one of the reasons I don't like the whole voting process of SxSW. It gets spammy on Twitter with requests and DM's, and then I see posts like this that, while the intent behind it is good (for MaW support), it could be viewed negatively.

Maybe it's just me having my cynical head on, as I know you're not "that guy". Just something about this approach doesn't sit with me.

Good luck with the panel, though.

Thank you Chris. I really appreciate your support.

Great idea Jay. You and Amber rock.

My wife is working on setting up some Make a Wish volunteer opportunities and I saw this post. Hopefully I'll see you at SXSW and you obviously have my vote.

Take care buddy.

Hey Jay!

You've got my vote! Thank you for supporting the Make a Wish Foundation. My cousin Kim made a wish once. She was an extra on Dawson's Creek and got to meet the whole cast. Pretty amazing for a 17 year old in the 1990's!

Cheers,
