YOUTILITY

Why Smart Marketing Is About Help, Not Hype

The difference between helping and selling is just two letters. But those two letters are critically important to your company’s success.

You’re not competing for attention only against other, similar products. You’re competing for attention against everything. To win in this hyper-competitive environment, you must ask “How can we help?”

If you sell something, you make a customer today, but if you genuinely help someone, you create a customer for life. This is Youtility.

Includes interviews with dozens of companies practicing Youtility, and provides 6 blueprints for building Youtility in your company.

The Double Life of a Live Tweet

As you may know if you follow me, I tend to tweet a lot. This is especially true at conferences, where I engage in Live Tweeting (sending summary tweets of main points the speaker is making while the presentation is ongoing).

Some followers have told me that they appreciate my live tweeting, and that I’m good at finding the core thesis and presenting it, sometimes with my own commentary attached. And while I’m happy that at least a few people find value in my on-the-scene tweeting, that’s not why I do it.

I live tweet to take notes.

I hate carrying stuff. I just don’t like to have objects in my hands that are bigger than an iPhone. I’m not really expecting to need to unleash some sudden karate moves, but in the literal sense, I don’t like to have my hands full.

Which is why live tweeting is so useful for me. I can communicate some information of interest to others, while creating digital notes that I can refer back to later. No pen. No paper. No laptop. Just two ears, two thumbs, and an iPhone.

The Ultimate Notepad

Here are my Twitter notes from an intimate session at South by Southwest on enterprise social media. The panel featured John Andrews @katadhin from Wal-Mart, Bryan Rhoads @bryanrhoads from Intel, and Lionel Menchaca @lionelatdell from Dell moderated by Jeremiah Owyang @jowyang from Forrester Research.

I grabbed this version of the live tweeting (just my notes) by going to http://search.twitter.com and searching for the event tag (#dellpanel) and (from:jaybaer).

If there’s a point that another live tweeter posted that I missed, I’ll retweet it so it comes up in my tweet stream when I reference later. It’s like copying notes from a smart kid in class icon wink The Double Life of a Live Tweet

while live twitter updates can be useful for the twitterer and their followers, they can also be extremely overwhelming if more than a few people you follow are at the same event. this is especially true if that event is something you have no interest in following or if you would rather wait for some considered analysis rather than parroting of the facts as they come to you.

Great point Jason. One of the best (personal) benefits of my Mardi Gras Tweet experiment was that I now have my 2009 Mardi Gras photos archived to relive and share via TwitPic.

I think you’re on to something with the whole note taking approach. Hope others join you and conferences steal your notes and repost them as a service. With props of course ;-)
