Is Your Twitter Addiction Paying Off

Twitter can suck you in to a vortex of counter-productivity like one bite of that KFC Double Down sandwich.
double down 300x220 Is Your Twitter Addiction Paying Off I love the Twitter culture and community, and I spend quite a bit of time using Twitter. It also continues to be a reliable conduit for new visitors here at Convince & Convert. Maybe you found this blog from Twitter?

But, for about 99.999999% of the world, Twitter usage is not an end, it’s a means to an end. Your Twitter goals may vary. Maybe you use Twitter to see what’s going on (the real-time search engine approach). Maybe you use Twitter to learn about something in which you’re interested. (53% of Twitter users never tweet). Maybe you use Twitter to meet interesting new people?

Whatever your Twitter objectives might be, I suggest you spend some time with yourself figuring out what they are, and how to measure whether you’re accomplishing your goals.

Indeed, I use Twitter for all of the reasons above (especially to meet new people), but for me and my business, I have two core, measurable goals.

  • Traffic to my blog. I consistently look at the number and percentage of visitors to this site that come from Twitter. Over the past 30 days, it was approximately 10%.
  • Followers per tweet. This is a metric I devised to help me determine the efficiency of the time I spend on Twitter.

The Followers Per Tweet Equation

followers per tweet Is Your Twitter Addiction Paying Off Certainly, you can generate a ton of Twitter followers using any number of schemes, tricks, and other false economies. But really, there’s not much point in that. There is no real benefit to having more Twitter followers per se, just a potentially bigger group of people with whom you can interact in pursuit of a more definable goal.

But, the number of followers you’ve accumulated is a metric that everyone looks at (admit it), and it’s at least a decent barometer of how well you’ve cultivated Twitter. (Assuming, however, that you are not using some sort of @ptbarnum system to generate thousands of followers).

I look at it a little differently. Sure, you can get a ton of followers by doing all the right things (Mack Collier has a great post here about how he got to 20,000 followers). But at what cost? If you spent all day, every day on Twitter you could certainly amass quite a following. But, the corresponding decline in your eyesight, hygiene, and patience for the Fail Whale would be drastic.

So, I’ve started to look at followers per tweet as a metric that focuses on the efficiency of time spent. Certainly, it’s not a comprehensive influence formula likeĀ Klout, or other Twitter-influence arbiters (interesting study this week from Sysomos), but it’s easy to calculate, and I think it makes sense.

As I’m writing this, my Followers per Tweet (FPT) is 2.46 (21,395 follower, 8,687 tweets sent – note that some Twitter weirdness has been massively reducing number of tweets sent reported in some cases). Gary Vaynerchuk has a FPT of 39.26. Mack is .60 Certainly, there are many other factors that contribute to number of followers, and I’m not saying this is in any way a metric judging how influential a person is on Twitter, just how efficient their Twitter usage might be.

Maybe FPT will help you think about the efficiency of your time spent on Twitter? What do you think?

Interesting approach and nice metric. Best sentence for me: "Twitter usage is not an end, its a means to an end." Funny to see how people are already gettign stressed looking 'just' at FPT now... just _one_ approach among others... Btw: Im a 1.9:)

Jay,

It all comes back to "why" we do what we do and at what cost. I appreciate your insight.

Twitter if used properly will pay you, but if adding 1000's of followers with automatic softwares, thats not going to work, we need to understand that social media require actual participation

If you are gaining something from that new fan, follower, "Like", or sharing of your content, than that's positive. Placing a measure of pure dollars on it is something you can do, but would go against the whole essence of social media.

And it shouldn't be anything hard or cumbersome to do, it should be the real you (person or business) connecting with others. If your goals are to bring more eyeballs to your main site(s), then just be more interesting and entertaining.

The way I have gained client after client after client has been from really opening eyes to become transparent and letting the world know who is behind the brand/company. Which as we see is the right way.

I guess what truly matters is how effective you are over how efficient,

Jay:

Yikes! I'm a .36 something on the FPT ratio. Not "good" by your metrics. Then again, I look at every single new follower and tend to block about 1/3 of them. Actually, I did a mini-experiment a few months ago with 100 new followers. I can't recall the exact numbers, but I think it was about 50/30/20 (followed back/blocked/"ignored").

As you've stated, there is no clear "best way" or best practice or idea metric/ratio, but I do think this has some value. However, I think you'd agree that the number that matters the most is $$. If I had a FPT ratio of .00001 yet I was rolling in cash (think Scrooge McDuck - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrooge_McDuck) it wouldn't really matter how much time I was spending on Twitter, right?

That being said, I do think (often) if my time on Twitter is well spent. Should I be focusing more effort in other places? The answer is likely ... YES! But...

Jay, the point you made(FPT) is no doubt relevant. But don't you think that increasing FPT means increasing the numerator part i.e it is same as increasing the number of followers. Again this leads to the question : whether we should just blindly, aimlessly go on making the followers or make followers who are potential ones i.e who are more likely to read our tweets and contribute to it in some way or the other.

Great job Jay. Just getting SM users to consider having objectives and measuring is good. For those of us who already have objectives you gave us something more to think about. When I speak on Social Media I say that Twitter is the least understood and most powerful platform for Social Media. Love your FPT metric. I also love seeing some tweets (under reactions below) where they are quoting their FPT. Looks like you've started something. Nice!
