Lee Gutkind, “the godfather behind creative nonfiction” joins The Business of Story to share his expert advice on turning your business’s nonfiction into a dynamic and engaging epic.
Lee is the Founder of the magazine/journal Creative Nonfiction. He is also the author & editor of more than 25 books, a Distinguished Writer-In-Residence at the Consortium of Science, Policy and Outcomes at Arizona State University, and a professor at the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication. He’s brought his expertise to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Good Morning America, NPR’s Talk of the Nation and All Things Considered, and the BBC.
Creative nonfiction has topped the charts as the fastest growing genre in both the publishing industry and across the board in education: biology, chemistry, MBA programs, law schools and more.
So what is the secret to making nonfiction so incredibly compelling? How do we strengthen our ability to take a true public story and make it personal, making the entire story much more compelling?
Lee emphasizes that it is simply a matter of a lot of time and hard work:
“You have to learn how to tell or show a story, but you also have to do the research necessary so that you can see what your product or service does in action. Once you do your research and practice you will find a couple of things. You’ll find that story is much more effective. You’ll find that you can do it fairly easily after you get to know it. And the most important part, it’s a hell of a lot of fun.”
