Social Media Monitoring Tools – How to Pick The Right One

Katie Van Domelen Social Media Monitoring Tools How to Pick The Right OneGuest post by Katie Van Domelen, the social media manager at Off Madison Ave in Tempe, Arizona. She specializes in social media strategies that lead to actionable plans to achieve real world objectives.

I’ve spent a lot of time working with various social media monitoring tools and I’ve whittled my list of favorites down to two or three. But I get a lot of questions about why I like particular tools better than others and how I decide to use which, so here’s a summary of my thought process that I hope will help you make a similar decision for your client or your organization.

First – What are the objectives? What questions are you trying to answer?
• Competitive analysis: How does your brand stack up to the competition?
• On-going monitoring: What are people saying about your brand and how can you use that information to either repair your reputation or identify opportunities?
• Research: How do people talk about your industry and who are the influencers? How can your brand participate in this space most effectively?

Second – Are there any special types of information you’ll need? That could be things like:
• Filtering by region: How specific will you need to be? County, region, state or city?
• Languages: Will you need to analyze foreign languages and do you have anyone in house to translate or will you need the tool to handle that?
• Demographics: Do you want to be able to filter by the demographics of the author?
• Sentiment: How much are you willing to automate verse check by hand? In other words, how accurate does it need to be?
*Note that although various tools might measure this data, it’s inclusion is dependent on the data being available on each mention so in most cases only a subset of the total mentions are counted in this type of analysis.

Third – how will you be handling the monitoring?
• Are you working with a team or collaborating with a client?
• How much control do you want to have to be able to make changes yourself?
• How frequently will you need to create reports or check the filters? How easy is it to pull a quick dashboard without a lot of work on your part?
• What’s the client/competitor/industry name(s)? How hard will it be to filter?

Fourth – what are the operational/resource concerns?
• What’s the budget? How much can you afford to spend on the tool?
• How much volume do you expect to get? You might want to test this.
• How much time will you be able to allocate to this project? (based on budget or schedule)

Once you’ve answered those questions you can compare major social media monitoring tools. I’ve started a comparison chart, based only on my own experience and opinion, for you to use and update as you see fit. To be fair, I’ve only included those I’ve actually used (Radian6, Sysomos, Spiral 16) or tested (Meltwater, SM2).

The main pitfall to avoid is flashy graphics for the sake of flashy graphics. Something that I couldn’t translate into the table above is how comfortable you feel using the UI. You need something that’s easy for you to use and that will be practical for the application you have at hand. Don’t be afraid to ask for demonstrations or trial accounts (even if you’ve already had a trial with that provider before.) They’ll often work with you to make sure you feel comfortable you’re making the right decision. You can also ask for training to make sure you’re using all the features to the best advantage. Another piece of advice I’d offer you is don’t get too caught up in budget. It’s much easier to pay a bit more to have the best tool for your needs than to start off with something that doesn’t have the power you need and have to upgrade later. You risk losing a lot of history and having to do a lot of work to get the program back on track.

And that’s how I pick the right social media monitoring tool for the job. What about you? Any factors you look for or service you use that I didn’t mention? Leave your additions, and any questions, in the comments!

Bonus: My list of social media monitoring tools that I collect to share with others and test myself.

Visible Intelligence isn't even on the list...I use them and the only thing lacking is there Translation. They are priced monthly but the entire fee is unlimited in the key words/searches and archive-able data. Not to mention they are the fastest platform in the industry. I highly recommend at least taking a look at them. I have subscribed to just about every platform in your chart and Visible is by far the best.

Katie,

Half of your post is great content/leadership e.g., your thought process on making a decision for your client or organization. However, I couldn't disagree with you more on your solution provider comparison matrix. Your analysis is frightening and frankly I'm surprised Jay didn't vet this post more closely before allowing it to go live.

Before I proceed, I want to be transparent about my relationship with a couple of the solution providers: I have used both Radian 6 and Spiral 16 extensively, I am not employed by either nor have I been paid to post any of the following content.

I'm having a very difficult time with your evaluation because you don't define your row criteria or your grading weight. From your comparison, it looks like you don't favor Spiral 16. When it comes to a side-by-side comparison between Radian 6 and Spiral 16 both products have pros and cons. Nothing is perfect, on this point I'm sure we agree. I do feel the need to provide supporting points that should alter your comparison of Spiral 16 as I feel you've done them a disservice. I cant speak for the other SMT providers and users but I would suspect they may have similar issues/concerns.

First: your analysis would have been better had you added the caveat that your list is strictly your opinion and not a formal methodology that allowed a true apples to apples comparison. Just saying, "to be fair,...." doesn't cut it.
Second: that first point is an assumption on my part but I'd bet it's a good one. When you say "......those I've actually used or "tested." From a researchers perspective "used" implies you purchased a license and were able to engage the SMT to its full potential. "Tested" implies you accessed a free session to investigate the SMT to get a feel for its potential. Is that an incorrect perspective? Which ones did you "use" and which ones did you "test?" For how long? Did you perform the exact same analysis?
----------------
The remainder of my points focus on certain rows within the comparison. Specifically those where Radian 6 was green and Spiral 16 was red.
----------------
Topic Research - What exactly do you mean? You don't define. Does this mean vertical or industry topics? Topics that are relevant to specific clients?
Real-Time: Spiral 16 utilizes the same real-time RSS feed sources as the rest of the tools in the market so how are you defining real-time in your comparison chart? To be clear to readers - I have extensive knowledge and use of both Radian 6 and Spiral 16 and Radian 6 is great if you want to spend your afternoons culling through hundreds of spam sites in your search results. In this arena an SMT that gives me real data that is actionable is far more valuable than tonnage. Spiral16 provides quality data. The data within Spiral 16 is vetted by algorithms and vetted by human analysts for maximum relevant. Real-time on some of the data sources is sacrificed for noise or spam reduction which is a point you don't even provide the reader.
In Control: users can certainly set up their own searches and adjust them as required. That said, they also have the option of assisting users in set up as it is more cost effective for them to work with the data analytics team determining objectives.
Pricing: Your pricing is incorrect. The price you have listed is double Spiral 16 based price.

I hope you have a chance to respond for the sake of the readers so that they may make the most informed decision possible and for the credibility of Jay's blog. Maybe the best thing is to remove the analysis matrix from the post. Just a thought.

Thank you for your time.

P.S. Someone mentioned dozens of solutions. The following link http://wiki.kenburbary.com/social-meda-monitori... shows at least 145 SMT solutions.

Good post, thank your for this. But, still, like any industry, I believe the vertical applications will ultimately win out over the all-purpose engines. Each industry has its own vocabulary, its own filters and nuances. Moreover, vertical solutions offer pricing that should make monitoring engines affordable to any small business.
FohBoh (the restaurant community) works exclusively in the restaurant industry, which seems to be attractive to a lot of social web developers these days, particularly on the B2C side. So, naturally, we developed our social media monitoring engine (FohBuzz) just for the restaurant industry vertical. The value proposition the five monitoring tools you listed fail to provide is usefulness relevance. Businesses need to save time and get to the point quickly. Because niche solutions offer context and relevance unique to a particular vertical, these solutions (just like Ning is to facebook) may in fact be the better solution.
FohBuzz, for example, is priced on an all-you-can-eat basis, not campaigns, volume and key words. Its positioned for any restaurant, any chain, operating anywhere and is fully customizable. We examined what an operator really needed to manage their online reputation, simplified it and make it work, just for one industry.
Let me suggest that you include vertical, or niche solutions on your next pass. Just like social networking sites, niche networks of practice and purpose, are powerful and unique.
